There is a lot of talk about strength and vulnerability these days.
Strength can show up in many ways, but I believe strength begins with being honest about being human. Being honest about being human requires vulnerability. They are two sides of the same coin in my book.
I admire those who are able to hold the two in tandem, because it is easier said than done. It requires doing personal and emotional work.
For many years going to counseling has been viewed as a weakness. It is quite the opposite. Admitting needing help is one of the greatest strengths one can possess. Yes, it feels vulnerable because it is. To allow oneself to truly be seen, heard, and validated is scary. Especially if you’ve ever felt “invisible.”
My mantra for my counseling practice is A Safe Place to Heal. Emotional and psychological safety are proven ingredients for vulnerability and change. When you have experienced what that feels like, change inevitably begins to happen.
